If yes, then you might have heard about the Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). Being just above the corner of the USA, there are ample amount of career prospects growing significantly in Canada that will boost its economy in the near future.

The PGWP is a work permit that allows you to work in Canada after the completion of your graduate program. The duration of the PGWP can vary depending on the duration of your course in your University/College.

However as easy as it sounds, getting the PGWP does have few eligibilities. This is where some international students fail to understand as they begin to believe the work permit is granted effortlessly.

Here are some mistakes international students make that results in a PGWP refusal.

Enrolling as a Part-time student

According to the IRCC, a governing body for immigration, to receive a PGWP in Canada you need to be registered as a full time student. Finishing a part time course is only going to make the immigrant officer reject your work permit in Canada.

We know most students want to work part time and they end up selecting a part time course to helps them achieve this desire.

However for your long term career in Canada you need to take pursue a full time course in your University.

Your Program is not eligible for PWGP

Sometimes when you select the right university that offers PWGP, the program that you have opt for may not be eligible for a work permit.

This is because Canada only ensures work permit to students whose course duration is more than 8 months.

Anything less will be considered 'rejection of work permit'.

For a 1 year course, a PGWP of 2 years will be granted. While for a 2 year course, 3 years of PGWP is provided.

Working for more than 20 hours

Work hard Play hard is a notion that’s taken very seriously by the Canadian law for students working a part time job. Working beyond the given hours, which is 20, will result in a refusal in PGWP.

So make sure you’re not working even a single extra hour. It is your responsibility to inform your employer and deny any extra work for additional hours.

So make sure you keep these in mind before you apply for University. If your already in a university where the PGWP is not enlisted then request for a transfer to a university where the program and university is eligible for PGWP.

Unfortunately if you are too late to avoid these mistakes you can approach the immigrant lawyers. They will take up your case and find a way to get your PGWP approved.

Of course it’s not 100% guaranteed you’re going to win the case but it’s worth giving it a try. It’s always best to contact a professional for advice.
